MORE ABOUT

GROTTO

Grotto developed as one of several small communities that emerged alongside the railroad corridor through the upper Skykomish Valley. During the height of railroad expansion and mountain industry, settlements like Grotto provided housing, services, and support for workers traveling through some of the most rugged terrain in Washington.

Life in these mountain communities was closely tied to the railroad, timber industry, and transportation routes that crossed Stevens Pass. While many of the larger neighboring towns grew into commercial centers, places like Grotto remained small and closely connected to the surrounding landscape.

Today, Grotto serves as a reminder of the countless small settlements that contributed to the development of the Sky Valley and helped connect communities across the Cascade Mountains.
