Roesler Log

One of the largest logs ever pulled from the Sultan Basin became a roadside landmark and lasting reminder of the valley’s deep logging history. The massive Oak Ridge Fir stunned locals in 1974 and continues to tell the story of the region’s timber industry decades later.

In January of 1974, a massive log harvested near Elk Creek in the Sultan Basin captured the attention of the entire community. Hauled by the Roesler Timber Company of Startup, the enormous Oak Ridge Fir was considered one of the largest logs seen in the region in many years.

The giant log measured more than 10 feet across at its base and weighed over 25 tons on its own. Combined with the truck and additional logs being hauled alongside it, the load weighed nearly 79,000 pounds. The company was required to obtain special permits before transporting the enormous timber across state highways toward Port Gardner near Arlington.

At the time, the single log was valued at nearly $4,000, an impressive figure in 1974. Residents gathered to see the unusual sight as the towering piece of timber rolled through town, with one bystander joking that it would “last all winter in my fireplace.”

Over time, the log became a recognizable local landmark and symbol of the Sky Valley’s logging heritage. In 2021, after a vehicle collision damaged the original base, William Roesler’s grandson, Brad Roesler, helped restore the display while working for the City of Sultan. A new river rock base was constructed and, with the help of the city crew, the historic log was carefully returned to its longtime home.

Today, the Roesler Log stands as a reminder of the timber industry that helped shape the communities of the Sky Valley.
