Freedom Rock

Located in Travelers Park along Highway 2, the “Freedom Rock” mural honors Sultan resident, veteran, logger, and Tulalip tribal member Sam Wold and his service during World War II.

Nestled within Travelers Park along Highway 2, the “Freedom Rock” mural recognizes the life and legacy of Sultan resident Sam Wold. A logger, veteran, and member of the Tulalip Tribe, Wold was widely respected within the community and became one of the most highly decorated tribal members of his time.

During World War II, Wold served in the United States Army with the 70th Infantry Division, known as the Trail Blazers. His service and accomplishments left a lasting impact both locally and beyond the valley. In addition to his military service, Wold operated a saw shop near the base of Sultan Basin Road, tying his story closely to the working history of the region.

Today, the mural stands as a tribute to both military service and local heritage, connecting visitors to one of Sultan’s notable historical figures. Additional information about Sam Wold and the surrounding history of the valley can be found at the Sky Valley Visitor Center in downtown Sultan.
